Can/should art be taught?

Courtesy of Nick:

Check out this post from Alec Soth's archived blog:

I recently dipped my toes into the art education industry. After several waves of exhilaration and despair, I’m happy to find myself back on the relative terra firma of this blog. But I’m struggling to bring any coherence to my impressions. With only two weeks spent at the San Francisco Art Institute, I’m not qualified to offer much on the topic of arts education. But something is nagging at me. Something seems wrong...

  1. Nick,
Thanks for posting this. It's a great collection of thoughts on the problem. Being relatively new to teaching, I think about this dilemma all the time. Can one "teach" art? And if so, how? I'm not always sure of the answers to these questions. I often despair about art schools as institutions, but I'm heartened knowing that 3-4 of my own teachers, as individuals, made a huge difference in my life and overall had a massively positive influence on me.
