The Tracey Baran Award

The Tracey Baran Award was established to honor the memory and achievement of Tracey Baran, a young photographer who died after a short illness in 2008. This annual award, with a fellowship grant of $5000, will be given to one emerging female photographer who is a citizen of the United States.

The grant recipient will be determined by a review panel based on artistic excellence, accomplishment to date, and the promise of future achievement in the medium.

The jury panel for 2010 will consist of Jen Davis, photographer; Christine Osinski, photographer; and Leslie Tonkonow, Director, Leslie Tonkonow Artworks+Projects.

This award was created by the School of Visual Arts BFA Photography Department and the Estate of Tracey Baran. It was funded by the generous artists who donated to the Tracey Baran Memorial Auction.

Eligibility: The contest is open to all emerging female photographers who are citizens of the United States. Emerging is defined as not having had a major solo show in a commercial gallery or museum, gallery representation or an advertising campaign.

How To Apply: Go to http://www.callforentry.org, where, you will find a link to the School of Visual Arts-Tracey Baran Award application, along with step-by-step instructions on how to register, which is free and user-friendly. All entries must be submitted online; we will not process any applications we receive by e-mail or standard mail.

A completed application consists of the following information & files:

Portfolio: A portfolio of twenty image files showing representative, recent work, with text descriptions for each: artist’s name, title, year, medium, and dimensions. All images must be saved at 1920 x 1920 pixels and as standard JPEG’s. All images must be under 1.8MB and use RGB color space, preferably sRGB. Because all images must be saved at 1920X1920 pixels, you may use a black mask if the image does not fit to these dimensions. Artist Statement: The purpose of the statement is to give the review panel a better understanding of your work, while they are viewing it. Your statement should be clear, concise and relate to the portfolio you submit.

Low Tech:
The Center is currently celebrating the low-tech processes and is interested in exhibiting the best low-tech images that photographers are producing. This call is open to all subjects and styles of photography that include a low tech means of image making or printing. This includes, but is not limited to; toy, Holga and Diana cameras, Pinhole, Wet Plate Collodian, Photograms, Callotypes, Cyanotypes, Polaroid and other traditional processes.

Juror:
Crista Dix is the Founder and Director of wall space gallery in Seattle and Santa Barbara.

Non-Members: $35 for the first five images.

Call for Artists: 2010 Windows on Main Street

Windows on Main Street is a unique and exciting project entering it’s sixth year in Beacon, NY. Participants create site-specific works of art as a means to engage the community, residences, and businesses through a month-long exhibition displayed in store windows located along our mile-long Main Street.

This year’s Windows on Main Street opens August 14th and will run through September 11th 2010.

This collaborative and multidisciplinary project is intended to stimulate interaction between artists, residents, and commercial vendors to explore how art can provide cultural and social understanding, be a catalyst for economic improvement in communities, and strengthen the relationship between residents and artists.

The opening of this event will be part of Beacon’s August 2010 Second Saturday celebration, a monthly celebration of the arts in which galleries and shops are open from noon until 9:00PM for openings, performances and other events. Beacon’s Second Saturday is a project of the Beacon Arts Community Association (BACA). For more information about Second Saturday events in August, please visit: www.beaconarts.org.

CALL FOR ARTISTS:

• Artists are responsible for installing, uninstalling, and any clean up required. All artwork must be family friendly, and artists must get final approval for any installations from their assigned store owner.
• There is no application fee, but if you are interested please send me the following:
• A description of what you would like to create (it can be as brief or as involved as you think is necessary, but I must receive some sort of proposal), and the storefront you would like to install it in (please also select backup options).
• An artist's statement that will accompany your installation.
• A link to an online portfolio or website to give me a sense of the kind of work you create.
• DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION IS JULY 1, 2010.
