InternActive was born out of enthusiasm and experience. As a grad student (we can’t say when) our leader, Lydia Johnson, pulled a harpsichord worth of strings to land an internship with the curator of antiquities at the J. Paul Getty Museum. For a student of the humanities, an internship in the vaults of the villa overlooking the Pacific was an awe-inspiring opportunity.

Diploma and white gloves in hand, our artifact lover eventually became a Professor and Museum Director herself. She took students under her wing, nurtured them, and placed them in internships. The student/mentor relationship was electric. Time and time again, Lydia found that an enthusiastic student and a knowledgeable supervisor made a great team and each benefited from the experience. That’s why InternActive was created.

A copyright notice indicates that a work is protected by copyright, identifies the copyright owner and shows the year of first publication. Under US law a copyright notice is no longer required to protect copyright. Photographers own the copyright to their work the instant they press the button.

However you should absolutely include a properly formatted copyright notice on each page of your website that displays an image. With the notice present the defendant in an infringement lawsuit can no longer claim they did not realize that the work was protected – the so-called “innocent infringement” defense which, if successful, can result in reduced damages.

International ArtExpo is selecting all interesting video/short.films to include in the next 2011 Exhibitions:

Liquid Cities & Temporary Identities at the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) in Bangalore, India (March 11-13, 2011). The selection will be presented in a contemporary videoart event with street screenings in Lleida, Spain (January 20-22, 2011). The deadline for applications is January 10, 2011.

The selections will be based on two main concepts. With the first section, Liquid Cities, we will present videos about contemporary cities, future cities and possible connections between videoarchitecture and videoart experimentations. The second section, Temporary Identities, will show videoart works based on the concept of contemporary identities, new technologies and body borders.

In 2010 Harpo Foundation initiated a thematic focus to explore the relationship between art and site in a dematerializing world. (2010 funding focus) The 12 projects that received Harpo Foundation´s support are addressing this theme in various ways. Several evoke the tension between global dynamics and hyper-locality. Others seek to stimulate local activation by investing in a community´s sense of place. The project Ceci n’est pas une voiture. Nomadic devices loom around the museum is born as a documentation and reflection exercise on the construction of mobile devices as elements of an expanded concept of the Museum or going as far as being an alternative to it. It is a research project that aims at cataloguing and reflecting on those projects which, circulating in the public space, challenge the conventional notion of the Museum and reformulate instead the functions of the exhibition display as a nomadic platform nurturing direct and self-managed participation, development of social research and dissemination of educational experiences. The project is carried out as a series of activities each of which is designed as a Parking episode. Parking 01, the first of this series, was developed and presented in Can Xalant in July 2010. Wattis Internships

A Wattis Institute internship represents a unique opportunity to experience a contemporary arts institution firsthand.

Working directly with the curatorial team on implementing the institute's exhibition program, interns are involved in a wide range of tasks, from the initial artist research to helping with the opening reception. Tasks vary from project to project and depend on the stage of each exhibition.

Time Period

There is no set application deadline for an internship, and inquiries are welcome throughout the year. However, we offer internships roughly coinciding with each academic term (January to May and September to December) and over the summer (June through August).

The internships are designed to cover a three-month period, with a minimum commitment of three days per week.

Requirements

Applicants must have a good understanding of art history and, preferably, be enrolled or have graduated from an art historical, visual arts, or curatorial degree program.

Applicants need to be flexible, willing to take on a range of tasks and actively participate in the institute's day-to-day activities. Projects are assigned according to the institute's changing needs and the skills and interests of each intern.

Basic computing skills (Mac OS, Word, Excel, and email) are required.

Home. We photograph our houses, our yards, our children, our friends, our celebrations, our anxieties. And we move beyond ourselves to photograph homes of others--strangers, as well as people we know. Home is where the camera is, and it's where we use it to record our lives and the lives of others. PhotoPlace Gallery is honored that esteemed photographer Julie Blackmon will act as juror for this exhibition on the theme of "Home." She will choose forty photographs for exhibition at PhotoPlace Gallery from March 1st through March 26th, 2011. She will also choose an additional thirty-five photographs of these subjects for the gallery’s “On-Line Annex.” All selected work will be included in a full-color exhibition catalogue available for purchase. To help artists defray costs, PhotoPlace Gallery offers to mat and frame work selected for exhibition free of charge, providing artists print their images to our pre-cut mat and frame sizes.

Julie Blackmon is known for her photographs of home and family that underscore moments of contemporary life while also drawing on art historical traditions of seventeenth-century Dutch genre painting. Her photographs have appeared on magazine covers and won prestigious awards, including the 2006 Critical Mass Book Award for "Domestic Vacations," named one of PDN's top 30 photographers in 2007 and American Photo's Emerging Photographer of 2008.

The Summer Institute in Art Museum Studies at Smith College

The Summer Institute in Art Museum studies is a co-educational program designed especially for college undergrads and for recent recipients of the B.A. degree who have not yet enrolled in graduate school. The six-week program is based on the Smith College campus, in Northampton, Massachusetts, and associated with the Smith College Museum of Art. Enrollment is limited to fifteen participants. A certificate will be awarded to all who complete the program successfully.

While the digital age is opening up new ways of using images of the world's cultural heritage in teaching and scholarship, there is no substitute for engaging with original works and sites or primary source material, or for attending conferences with colleagues. In recognition of this need, ARTstor is providing five travel awards in the amount of $1,500 each (to be used by December 31, 2012) to help support the educational and scholarly activities—such as flying to a conference—of graduate students, scholars, curators, educators, and librarians in any field.

To be considered for an award, applicants must create and submit an ARTstor image group (or a series of image groups) and a single accompanying essay that creatively and compellingly demonstrates why the image group(s) is useful for teaching, research, or scholarship. These submissions will help us better understand the uses that scholars and teachers are making of the ARTstor Digital Library's content and tools and will provide insight into how we can better serve the educational community. The five winning submissions will be determined by ARTstor staff. Please note that this award is not intended to sponsor new photography for the ARTstor Digital Library.

Resident artists work in an individual studio for one to two years on research, experiment, projects and production. The Worldwide Photography Gala Awards organize the second edition of THE JACOB RIIS AWARD (named after the Danish-American photographer, 1849-1914) benefiting Save the Children Foundation. It will focus in portfolios (minimum of 8 and maximum of 12 images) inviting photographers working in all mediums, styles and schools of thought. Traditional, contemporary, avant-garde, creative and experimental works that include old and new processes, mixed techniques, and challenging personal, emotional or political statements will be welcome.

The Award is open worldwide to all professional and amateur photographers working with digital or traditional photography or combinations of both. There is no theme for this Award, and the images will be evaluated as a cohesive body of work (a theme or images representing the artistic trajectory of the photographer), rather than individual images.

Artists who are awarded a month-long residency at the Saltonstall Arts Colony are given time, space, and support for their own creative research. As visual artist, Edith Isaac Rose said, "the spacious, comfortable live/work quarters are perfect. The size of the group was perfect. Our particular group formed a community very quickly....when I think of the Saltonstall, I think of a place I came to and didn't want to leave."

In 2011 there will be 4 month-long sessions, beginning in May and running through September. Artists are chosen by a panel of jurors for each dicipline, and scheduled for one of the 4 sessions.

All visual and literary artists are invited to apply for the month-long Summer Residencices at the Saltonstall Arts Colony, located in the heart of the Finger Lakes region of New York State. Each artist has a private apartment and bath with ample work space. There are two large, well-lit studios for the visual artists and a black/white darkroom for the photographer.

The Saltonstall Arts Colony is situated on 198 acres. Although just minutes from downtown Ithaca, we are surrounded by fields and woods, offering the artist a quiet studio in a beautiful setting, and the time to let the creative process unfold. Past residents have said the Saltonstall Arts Colony provides one of the best residency experiences in the country. Since its inception in 1995, this small but singular colony has provided time and space for more than 200 outstanding photographers, writers, poets, biographers, sculptors, painters, and visual artists. The Revisiting Ephemera Graduate Student Conference and Exhibition is presented by the Visual Arts graduate students at the University of Western Ontario and will take place on January 15, 2011 in the ArtLab Gallery, UWO. Organized in parallel with Bruce Nauman: Audio/Video Piece for London, an exhibition at the Forest City Gallery, Revisiting Ephemera encompasses topics such as but not limited to: ephemera, transience, time, de-objectification, performance, documentation and the archive, as they pertain to the history, creation and curation of visual arts and material culture.

We invite MA, MFA and PhD students from Visual Arts and all related disciplines to put forward submissions relating to the concept of ephemera in visual and material culture. You may submit:

1. A proposal for an academic paper, artistic or performative presentation 20 minutes in length, OR
2. An artwork proposal for inclusion in a group exhibition

Growing out of the recent curatorial, critical and academic interest in the re-staging of historical conceptual art exhibitions, Revisiting Ephemera calls presenters to explore the concept of ephemera in art, artist practices, exhibitions, curatorial studies and in other fields that engage with visual and material cultures.

Conference papers may consider artworks or artistic practices that are conceptual, performance, time-based, ephemeral or in some way distinct from the traditional art object.

How is this work or practice revisited? Can an ephemeral work or performance be preserved? How does the artwork depend on, stray from or relate to its documentation via photo, text or archival materials? Does documentation ultimately replace the event? Is there such a thing as an enduring art object? What happens when so-called ephemera becomes an art object? How does the status of ephemera change when it is part of the archive or historical record?

Presentations may also consider artists who produce ephemera as art, conceptual artists and histories, and curatorial practices both recent and historical that engage with ephemeral or time-based art and the notion of re-staging, the archive and documentation. Topics may also engage with the ways in which the ephemeral has been studied and considered in academic and non-academic discourses alike.

The Silver Eye Center for Photography is pleased to announce Fellowship 2010, our international photography competition. Our distinguished juror is Deborah Klochko, Executive Director of the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego, California.

As we enter our 11th Fellowship year, the competition is now open to all international photographers, including Silver Eye members, and we are now awarding two Fellowships.

• A $3,500 award is open to all eligible photographers.

• A $1,500 is open only to Pennsylvania residents (who may apply in both categories).

Both winning artists’ work will be exhibited at Silver Eye in shows opening in late November 2010.

Booksmart Studio is seeking submissions for the exhibition "In Habitation".

"In Habitation" is looking for photographs that help explore the landscape and infrastructure of America, the population responsible for it, and the symbiotic relationship between the two. This exhibition explores the ways in which our urban and rural centers operate and fluctuate, creating a uniquely American dynamic of experience. This exhibition will ultimately present a socio-graphic interpretation of America- a mapping of people and place.

Juror: David Wright

David Wright, 2006 graduate of RIT's photojournalism program, is an editorial photographer based out of Maine. His series "Alebtong, Uganda, 2009" is very well known and he was also the co-founder of the project and exhibition called Pause to Begin.

In January and February 2009 David spent 2 months in northern Uganda photographing for A River Blue, a school providing psychosocial counseling and intense vocational training in topics like tailoring, agriculture, and arts to vulnerable youth.

His series "Alebtong, Uganda, 2009" was selected as 1 of 3 winners in the 2009 Conscientious Portfolio Competition and was exhibited at Anastasia Photo in New York from February 5 – April 14, 2010.

David’s editorial work is represented by Redux Pictures and his Uganda work is represented by Anastasia Photo. Most photographs on this website are available as licensed images and edition prints.

The Mission:
New York City is indisputably the cultural capital of the world. In the 20th century, the nexus of relevant art was the island of Manhattan. But the 21st century has seen a definitive shift, making Brooklyn the new epicenter of literature, music, art, and photography.

Capture Brooklyn, a new initiative by the New York Photo Festival, is a juried exhibition of contemporary photography that seeks to capture the spirit and essence of Brooklyn, and to showcase the vitality of photography happening in the hottest part of New York right now!

Drawn from submissions received online through August 29, 2010, 80 photographs will be selected and exhibited at The powerHouse Arena in Dumbo, Brooklyn. The show's official opening will take place during this year's Dumbo Arts Festival (September 24–26), an event that draws over 150,000 visitors over 3 days – and will remain open until October 15, 2010.

It is our hope that Capture Brooklyn will not only serve to acknowledge and celebrate the fantastic photography happening in this borough, but also encourage and nurture the growth of Brooklyn's artistic renaissance.

The Rules:
* All work submitted for consideration must have been produced (or published) after January 1, 2009.
* Winners will be notified by September 6 and will need to drop-off their work at The powerHouse Arena no later than September 20, 2010.
* All work must be dropped-off suitably mounted or framed and ready for hanging, or they will not be included in the show.
* All work must be clearly labelled with the artist's name and contact info.
* All selected photographs must remain for the duration of the exhibition. Substitutions will not be accepted.
* Artists are responsible for all shipping costs to and from The powerHouse Arena.

The William and Elizabeth Patterson Curatorial Fellowship in Photography at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is an annual fellowship for serious graduate- level students with a demonstrated interest in a museum career in photography. This year SFMOMA is offering one part-time 20-week fellowship beginning in mid-September 2010.

The Fellow will be undertaking in-depth research on SFMOMA’s extensive permanent collection of photography. During the Fellow’s residency, he or she will conduct scholarly research on individual artists and objects, write texts for publication on the Museum’s website, verify and correct existing cataloguing information, and perform data entry. He or she will also be expected to contribute to the department’s day-to-day activities, as assigned. The fellowship requires a 17.5 hour/week commitment and includes a stipend of $7,875. The successful applicant will have a master’s degree (or higher) in art history with an emphasis on the history of photography and a demonstrated commitment to a museum career. He or she will possess excellent writing, research, and communication skills, as well as reading ability in at least one foreign language.

The Tracey Baran Award

The Tracey Baran Award was established to honor the memory and achievement of Tracey Baran, a young photographer who died after a short illness in 2008. This annual award, with a fellowship grant of $5000, will be given to one emerging female photographer who is a citizen of the United States.

The grant recipient will be determined by a review panel based on artistic excellence, accomplishment to date, and the promise of future achievement in the medium.

The jury panel for 2010 will consist of Jen Davis, photographer; Christine Osinski, photographer; and Leslie Tonkonow, Director, Leslie Tonkonow Artworks+Projects.

This award was created by the School of Visual Arts BFA Photography Department and the Estate of Tracey Baran. It was funded by the generous artists who donated to the Tracey Baran Memorial Auction.

Windows on Main Street is a unique and exciting project entering it’s sixth year in Beacon, NY. Participants create site-specific works of art as a means to engage the community, residences, and businesses through a month-long exhibition displayed in store windows located along our mile-long Main Street.

This year’s Windows on Main Street opens August 14th and will run through September 11th 2010.

This collaborative and multidisciplinary project is intended to stimulate interaction between artists, residents, and commercial vendors to explore how art can provide cultural and social understanding, be a catalyst for economic improvement in communities, and strengthen the relationship between residents and artists.

The opening of this event will be part of Beacon’s August 2010 Second Saturday celebration, a monthly celebration of the arts in which galleries and shops are open from noon until 9:00PM for openings, performances and other events. Beacon’s Second Saturday is a project of the Beacon Arts Community Association (BACA). For more information about Second Saturday events in August, please visit: www.beaconarts.org.

The Photographer's Gallery: Annual Graduates Exhibition

freshfacedandwildeyed is an annual exhibition open to recent visual arts graduates, representing the most dynamic new photographic work from across the UK.

Following an online submission process, up to 25 artists are chosen by a jury to exhibit online and at The Photographers' Gallery.

Who can apply?
Any photographer/ artist who graduated from a visual arts course, BA or MA level, in 2009.

How and when to submit work:
When: 5 February – 3 March 2010
How: Please re-visit freshfacedandwildeyed then to access the online application form. Work submitted by post or email will not be considered.

You can submit up to 8 images. They should be in jpeg format. You will need to provide the medium, title, date, print size, presentation details and framing specifications of each work.

Artists Unite for Haiti: Call for Art

This is a great opportunity to help disaster relief efforts in Haiti and to participate in an exhibition:

Open to all artists of any level and any country - everyone is welcome to contribute. Help the Disaster Relief efforts in Haiti by donating an unframed work on paper to the Artists Unite for Haiti art sale.

SPECIFICATIONS:

Work on paper or light board any size, but no larger than 11 x 17 inches
Any medium such as: drawing, painting, collage, photography
All works must be unframed and unsigned- the work needs to be signed on the back (also include your city and country)
Work will be hung using clips, so avoid using heavy materials.

Each artwork will be sold for $25.00. The artists will remain anonymous until after sale. Multiple submissions are welcome.

Deadline for submissions to arrive in the gallery is: Thursday February 4th, 2010

The Nadar Award: Call for Entry

The Worldwide Photography Gala Awards (WPGA) has launched a Juried competition for students and recent graduates of photography, fine art and design students of institutes, colleges, schools and universities worldwide: The Nadar Award for Students.

The first prize will be the attendance (including round trip from the country and city of residence, lodging, and tuition) to a Workshop organized by Santa Fe Photography Workshops, and the winner images will be widely promoted internationally. Selected images will be exposed during 2010 in US and Europe. As in other contest organized by WPGA who partner with Save the Children, a portion of its revenue (entry fees and sales of works in exhibitions) will be donated to that humanitarian organization.

WPGA invites all photography and fine art students working in all mediums, styles and schools of thought. Traditional, contemporary, avant-garde, creative and experimental works that include old and new processes, mixed techniques, and challenging personal, emotional or political statements are welcome to The Nadar Award.
